Belgium is world renowned for its classic art, painted by the likes of Rubens, Van Eyck, and Memling. Their masterpieces are displayed in museums and churches throughout the country and in collections abroad. But Belgium's art has another, farcical face, with equally grand repute: the comic strip. The art form was launched as an editorial novelty in the Belgian press in 1929 with Tintin, the Reporter, by the artist Hergé (1907-1983), father of the Belgian comic. Tintin was an immediate sensation with readers of all ages and inspired an insatiable demand for comics.
Belgium is THE country of comic strips and Brussels, in particular, is the focal point for the 9th art. As any visitor to Brussels will soon discover, the comic strip heroes are everywhere: on street corners, in the metro, on walls or in bars..
I looked but I did not find Tintin - sorry about that :-)
