New York traffic and buildings
As with everything in New York it is large - the cars are bigger, the buildings are bigger, the people are bigger (it feels like it when you stand last in a line of 100 others). But then you go around a corner and find a green spot of grass and trees and it feels like you have found heaven.
No other would make buildings in the shape and form as in New York - and this pages prove I am right. First the Empire State Building - the highest building in the city and so beautiful. It was build in the time of depression but it is the one of the most expensive buildings I have ever been in - marble on the flow and wall, mirrors on the ceiling, gold and silver everywhere. 3,5 millions visits every year. 443 meters from the ground to the absolute top, 381 meters high when you deduct the pylon on top. It was finish in 1931 and by that time the workers have used 60,000 ton of steel, 5,600 of telephone wire and 100 km water pipe. 15,000 people work in the building everyday and more then 35,000 tourists takes the elevators to the top each day.
And then there are the Flatiron Building from 1902 that was the world largest building at the time with it's 20 storeys.
Rockefeller Center is a masterpiece in art deco from 1930. I have only one picture from this building here but the Radio City Hall is part of the same complex where you can find more photos.
The Chrysler Building on 42nd Street was build in 1930 - and was the largest building in the world before the Empire State Building was finished. The top is made as a model of the Chrysler Plymouth grille from 1929.
I have a single picture of the Guggenheim Museum that in form and shape is so different from the others.
Radio City Music Hall is part of the famous Rockefeller Center. And even if it is a modern theatre they have kept the old design in everything. I must excuse the quality of these photos, but I felt I had to have them on this presentation of New York. The inside is a true Art Deco and looks very much like it did when it first opened in 1932. It is famous for the concerts and shows but maybe most for The Rockettes - the dancing girls with long legs :-)
Brooklyn Bridge is a member of a very exclusive club - the most beautiful buildings in the world.
I can walk on that bridge forever and I would love every minute of it - there is so much in New York that can take your breath away but only a few things that makes you want to stay forever. Brooklyn Bridge is one of those. And please do not just walk to the first pier - as most tourists do - but take the complete walk to Brooklyn. When all the tourists are gone you can feel the spirit of the bridge - and that happens when you reach the middle. From then you are alone with the New Yorkers and the bridge.
Enough words... here are the pictures.
