The best way to get to know a city is to walk around - take a slow look. On those walks I found a few things that might interest you.
The Munson Diner is a typical New York diner - look under Midnight in NY to find a picture of the diner at night with the lights are on.
As with everything in New York it is large - the cars are bigger, the buildings are bigger, the people are bigger (it feels like it when you stand last in a line of 100 others). But then you go around a corner and find a green spot of grass and trees and it feels like you have found heaven.
